Nigeria v Argentina: A ‘luck of the draw’ rivalry

There are plenty of certainties when it comes to World Cups. Germany will be good, English expectations will outstrip performance and everybody will fall in love with a plucky underdog. One part of the quadrennial tournament that shouldn’t be a certainty, however, is the draw. But try telling that to fans of Nigeria. The Super Eagles have qualified for six World Cups, since their first in the USA in 1994. They’ve been drawn against Argentina in five of them. The two teams’ group stage encounters have gone beyond a certainty, and become an expectation and measuring stick for their performance.
