The history of the quarter-final matchups

The round of 16 started with a bang as France beat Argentina for the first time at a World Cup in a game that will live long in the memory. Uruguay and Russia also achieved firsts, as the South Americans beat Portugal for the first time ever and Russia finally knocked Spain out of a tournament. Elsewhere Brazilmaintained their World Cup record against Mexico and England kept up their unbeaten streak against Colombia. Eight teams now remain and we have an interesting mix of some established rivalries and a first World Cup meeting.
